Oh. My Gosh. Mackey, you have impressed me with this debut novel! I read it non-stop, droopy eyes and all, but I didn’t care. The story was too good for sleep to override it!
So enough about that. Let’s cut to the chase. “She Who Dares Wins” is about a wounded young woman by the name of Dakota. She takes a vacation on an island, only to fall in love with a hot celebrity named Kyle. However, not everything goes well as her ex-husband comes after her, causing Dakota to try and flee to another island, where she meets the cutest 12-year-old, Daniel.
This story is about love. And it’s about tragedy. It’s about everything, really. That’s what I like about it. It’s beautiful, it’s poetic, it’s mysterious. A book one can never put down. Mackey structured her words so perfectly they they don’t end up choppy; nor do they end up as run-offs. They were flawless, and that’s what I’d like to see in more books.
The characters, especially Dakota, Kyle, and Daniel, were very three-dimensional. They were so distinct and realistic that I can perfectly see (and relate to) them as real living beings.
Kudos to you, Mackey! “She Who Dares Wins” is one of the few masterpieces I loved. Keep up the good work!
Amanda Mackey's debut novel, `She Who Dares Wins' is, to put it too bluntly, an astonishing literary achievement that will sweep you off your feet. In certain ways, I recognize the emotional resonance and literary genetic strands of Frances Mays' `Under the Tuscan Sun' or even Gilberts' `Eat, Pray, Love'--but of course, Mackey's `She Who Dares Wins' stands on its own as an incredibly entertaining novel that is set to become a classic.
`She Who Dares Wins' is about Dakota Livingston, a survivor of a troubled, almost fatal marriage. Months after escaping her husband, she attempts to pick up the broken pieces of her life by going on a holiday--hopefully, to heal her wounds. Enjoying the sights and culture of some tropical island, Dakota easily falls in love with the actor Kyle Rutherford. But as it turns out, Dakota's ex-husband hounds her, even hurting her father badly. In an attempt to come to the aid of her father, Dakota takes the first plane out of her island paradise, only to find herself the sole miraculous survivor of a plane crash. Rescued and cared for in another tropical island, Dakota finds a kindred soul--Daniel, all 12 years of him, already battered and emotionally scarred from his father's constant abuse. What Dakota does in response to Daniel's plight--as well as to her own husband--is what sets apart `She Who Dares Wins' from most of the romance/ contemporary fiction I have recently read--that white-knuckled, edge-of-your-seat element of suspense.
Mackay's sublime writing--her crisp, confident language, her perfect prosody, the cadence of her turns of phrase--is just pure gravy. Which is just my long-winded way of saying this is top-notch writing from a first-time author.
Overall, `She Who Dares Wins' is the perfect read for those who like their romance novels intelligently and tastefully written, with that requisite emotional resonance and blood-curdling suspense that will keep you turning the pages. This is a story your love to inhabit and re-inhabit. Five stars, no less.
